Artist Statement

This is a series of pinhole photographs (cyanotype and gum bichromate) which was developed during a two year stay on a Greek island in the Aegean sea. Living year round on an island one for an extended period one develops a sense of isolation, of sometimes being stranded on a semi-deserted island. The intensely arid nature of the island for six months of the year in addition to the isolation leads one to feel the fragility of life as one notices the small plants clinging desperately to the soil so as not to be swept away by the fierce winds or shrivelled up by the intense heat. This series attempts to look at nature from a non-human perspective and in doing so perhaps gives a sense of life either before the arrival of humans or after our departure.

Exhibition at Galerie Duboys in Paris January 25-February 22, 2014.
